The curriculum in KS3

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

In Key Stage 3, pupils are taught through the pre formal, semi formal or formal curriculum dependent upon their needs. The formal curriculum is an adapted and modified National Curriculum which is accessible, meaningful and relevant to all pupils. Every lesson is planned to be challenging, enjoyable and successful for each pupil and there are many opportunities for practical hands-on activities and visits to ensure that learning is fun! Great emphasis is placed upon personal/social development, building self-esteem, self-confidence, promoting independence and being sensitive to the needs of others.

Pupils are divided into class groups dependent upon their learning style which provides them with continuity and a nurturing environment. Most subjects are taught by class teachers in the classroom although pupils are taught by Specialist teachers in Drama, Art and Music.  There are opportunities for pupils to integrate across the classes throughout the week. Pupils integrate at lunchtimes and special topic afternoons during the term are taught in mixed classes.

A house point system is operated in the Secondary department. Pupils all enjoy gaining house points throughout the week and attending a special assembly on a Monday when the winning house for the week is announced and a ‘pupil of the week’ certificate is presented by each class.

Planning is on a three year rolling topic basis and each class base their work on the key stage topic regardless of the curriculum they are on. School trips and outside agencies are used to support the topics.
